A party from OIE and FAO visited Graduate School, The University of Tokyo

Stuart Slorach, Ph.D., Chairman of APGSWG at OIE; Carolyn Benigno, Ph.D., Officer of FAO-APHCA; Stephen Page, FAO consultant, staff of OIE Tokyo Office and the representatives of Famic (7 in total) visited The University of Tokyo.

Shinichi Shogenji, the dean of the Graduate School, gave a general introduction to the Graduate School, and summarized the education system of veterinary sciences and the Research Center for Food Safety at the dean’s office. Later, the details of the Research Center were explained and its role as OIE Collaborating Center for Food Safety, specifically the contribution in the Asia-Pacific region, was discussed.

Representatives from 20 countries in Asia-Pacific region and the parties of OIE/FAO gathered to discuss the efforts, preparation of legal framework and quarantine, information network and development of inspection technology, etc., of each country regarding safety of livestock feed and human food through such feed.

Exchange with Massey University

R.H. Archer, Professor, the director of the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health, College of Science at Massey University, New Zealand, (Food Engineering) and M.C. Kruger, Professor (Nutrition Physiology) visited us. They introduced their research activities and education at the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health and case studies on health effects by utilizing nutrient composition of farm products in New Zealand. Possibilities of joint research in the food science area were discussed.

International conference on food safety and security was held. Tsutomu Sekizaki, Director of the Research Center for Food Safety, was invited as ones of the speakers, and lectured on Streptococcus infection of swine (a zoonosis) that was spreading around Asia.
